August 2008
28th August 2008 - New Canon and Nikon DSLRs launched
There's nothing like competition between close rivals to keep innovation alive - the announcements over the last few days of new DSLRs add yet more features to already very impressive specifications including higher resolution sensors, faster frame rates, faster in-camera processing, etc. The Nikon D90 will also have integrated digital video capability, a first on a DSLR but something that has been available for ages on the smaller digicams or point and shoots.
What really amuses me, however, is the noise that has appeared on many internet forums. There are people damning the cameras because of one particular feature of not, there's people arguing their image quality over and above each other and against different cameras. These new cameras are not even available for review, so how on earth such pontification is even vaguely irrelevant I have no idea. I do understand the technical stuff being argued, but I fail to see the relevance until we've seen, handled and taken photographs.
My advice - read the press releases from Canon and Nikon (and anyone else) and wait for the real reviews to appear. Better yet, just go out with your current camera and take some pictures! I'm always amazed at just how fantastic the image quality of my camera is...
27th August 2008 - General Site Updates
I have been convalescing at home for the last few weeks following a painful and wearing back injury but have managed to perform a bit of a tidy-up of this site. This includes repairing a few missing links, general file cleaning and a revamp of the site navigation and menu. I have also changed the home page image to one from a recent trip to Norway. This trip was marred by the back injury on day 2 of a 14 day visit, so very little was achieved.
