April 2008
25th April 2008 - In Poucher's Footprints
At the beginning of April I reviewed W.A. Poucher's 1946 book "Peak Panorama: Kinder Scout to Dovedale", a lovely book albeit the standards of photographic reproduction are very poor by the standards of today. Whilst some of his later walking guides have been revised and continue to be published this book is only available through the second hand and antiquarian market. It contains many fine views of the Derbyshire Peak District and I want to be able to reproduce the same views some 60 years later. The book contains 85 images all taken with a Leica IIIa and in black and white. I am using modern digital camera technology to reproduce the same views.

(2008-2232) The Surprise View from Millstone Edge Nick
Plate 38 in the book
As of today I have posted just seven views, inadvertently taken from the same spot as Poucher stood in or very near. I plan to add to this project over time and will also include similar views, but in colour. Read more...
21st April 2008 - A Week in Southwold
I have just returned from a week in the Suffolk Coastal town of Southwold, a place I've been to many times before and found relaxing, peaceful and just plain nice. This is a record of what says "Southwold" to me. Read more...

(2008-1922) Remains of old harbour wall
I am also merging the What's New page and the Photoblog to create a single New page. Each month the previous posts will be archived. The main menu has also been changed to reflect this.
6th April 2008 - Along Gritstone Crags: White Edge
White Edge is my least favourite part of the journey "along gritstone crags". It doesn't share the spectacular nature of the other edges, but still makes a great walk with fantastic views over the Derwent Valley. Read more...

(2008-1215) White Edge, Derbyshire Peak District
2nd April 2008 - Equipment Review: Jobu Design Black Widow Gimbal Head
After acquiring a Canon 500mm f4 IS L lens I wanted to find a better support than the monopod or video style head on my Manfrotto tripod. A little research later and I had a new Gimbal head waiting for the lens to be mounted and tried out. Read the review of a rather excellent tripod head.
1st April 2008 - Book reviews
The I have just added reviews of Fran Halsall's "The Peak District", a great collection of photographs from across the Peak District, and certainly not the rather twee images that other such books contain.
In addition I have included a few comments on W.A Poucher's "Peak Panorama: Kinder Scout to Dovedale" published in 1946. A lovely book, although the image quality is somewhat lacking compared to today's standards!
