About the Photographer

My passion is for photography from the natural world - from broad landscape to inner detail.

This passion was inspired by my grandfather whilst I was a child. He was an expert amateur who created many wonderful photographs, mostly of his family, but his real passion lay in still life. We talked and shared ideas. He inspired me. I grew up with black and white film and a darkroom. Eventually I inherited his beloved Rolleiflex and used it to explore techniques and creativity whilst still at school. Then came further education, career development and young children. Photography as an art was abandoned for years until digital started to take over and pulled me back. Since 2000 I have used a variety of digital cameras to continue to explore the world as I see it through a lens.

I feel privileged to live on the eastern edge of the Derbyshire Peak District. This makes it possible to get to my favourite locations quickly and easily, especially when the evening light looks like it is going to be great. However, I spend a lot of time in London where, quite frankly, the morning or evening light is just not the same! My passion is for landscape and natural history photography. For the broad landscapes I am particularly keen on the Derbyshire Peak District, the Highlands of Scotland and Scandinavia. I am trying to find my own angle on plants and to this end I visit many gardens both locally and further afield.

Gear

Just like any photographer I would contend that I am far more interested in the art of photography than the technical equipment used to create that art. However, I have to admit that I am really as interested in the technology as anyone else!Today I use Canon cameras and lenses exclusively although I have used Leica, Rollei, Sony, Olympus, Zeiss and Kodak gear in the past. My current gear includes the Canon 1Ds Mark III and Canon 5D bodies and a variety of lenses, mostly L series from 15mm to 500mm focal length. I use tripods from Gitzo and Manfrotto, B+W and Cokin filters. I use an Apple MacBook Pro and Apple's Aperture for image processing and management. Adobe PhotoShop CS is occasionally used and Adobe Dreamweaver is used for all web design. Most printing is done with Hewlett Packard equipment.
