Curbar Edge

Curbar Edge has all the characteristics to make it a firm favourite with many people. It has plenty of height above the villages of Calver and Curbar. The views along the valley below are fantastic. It is long enough to loose oneself exploring it. It has getting on for 300 climbing routes, many of a good height. The views to the side away from the valley aren't bad either looking up to White Edge. There is a good footpath along it and easy car access. It can be taken in with many other walks. All in all it gets top marks! It is my daughter's favourite and she has often asked to go there in the evenings at weekends or after school during the summer, a request I am always very happy to agree to and as a consequence I have visited it more times than any other part of the journey along the edges.

Views

Curbar Edge makes a grand spectacle sitting well above the River Derwent and some of the best views of it are from the A623 road running from Baslow to Calver. On a summer's evening the warm sunlight picks the Edge out beautifully and it just glows beautifully. This is also the time to be on top as the sunsets looking west over the valley can be quite spectacular and light up the area rather nicely. I try to make a habit of looking in the opposite direction to the sunset itself, however, as this provides the best light along the rocks. The challenge is taking a photograph of the rocky edge without being equipped with wings to get a view from far enough out. Fortunately there are several areas where rocks jut out or overhang that provide a great vantage point.

There are a few millstones left lying in a nearly finished state along the edge or near the path that runs along the base betraying the area's industrial past. Something very long gone.

Access and Walking

Curbar Edge is easily accessible from the car park at Curbar Gap. This small car park can get very busy but there is some additional parking at the edge of the road below the edge on the Curbar road. The walk to the edge is easy and along a well maintained footpath. This path follows the edge and provides spectacular views all the way along. It joins the path along Froggatt Edge.
